PART 9 — THE SECRET HIDDEN INSIDE MY DAUGHTER’S STUFFED RABBIT

CHILD OBSERVED SECOND MINOR IN LOCKED RESIDENTIAL ROOM.

Grace.
My other daughter.
I began shaking.
“She saw her sister.”
Harris nodded cautiously.
“It appears she saw another child.”
I covered my face.
Two little girls.
Born minutes apart.
Separated before their mother regained consciousness.
Meeting secretly in a house full of locked doors.
And one of them begging to go home.
But Harris wasn’t finished.
“The report also says someone tried to prevent Lily from discussing what she had witnessed.”
I lowered my hands.
“Who?”
He looked at me.
“Margaret Carter.”
My heart hardened.
Of course.
The woman who taught my daughter that good girls kept family secrets.
The woman who told me children could be dramatic.
The woman who arrived at the hospital trying to take Lily away.
“What did she do?”
“We haven’t established the full circumstances. The report contains allegations that need to be corroborated.”
I looked toward Lily’s room.
Then whispered, “Did anyone hurt her?”
Sarah answered carefully.
“The medical team is evaluating her symptoms and any possible harm. The report alone cannot establish what happened to her physically.”
I nodded.
I needed answers.
But I wasn’t going to turn speculation into another burden for my daughter.
Then Harris opened a second recovered file.
“This was attached to the incident report.”
A photograph appeared.
A small office.
Wooden shelves.
A desk.
An overturned chair.
And on the floor, beside a filing cabinet, lay something pink.
A child’s hair ribbon.
I recognized it immediately.
I’d tied it into Lily’s hair that Saturday morning.
She had been wearing a yellow dress with white flowers.
Daniel told me he was taking her to the lake.
When she returned, the ribbon was missing.
He said she’d probably lost it at the playground.
I began crying.
“That’s hers.”
Sarah leaned closer.
“Are you certain?”
“Yes. I bought it for her birthday.”
I stared at the photograph.
My little girl had been inside that office.
Frightened.
Surrounded by adults hiding terrible things.
And I’d been home folding laundry.
Then Harris opened another attachment.
A video.
Only forty-three seconds.
The camera showed the same office.
Nathan Brooks stood beside the desk.
Daniel was near the door.
Margaret was holding a folder.
A child’s voice sounded from the hallway.
“Please let her out.”
My entire body froze.
Lily.
I knew my daughter’s voice.
I would recognize it anywhere.
Nathan turned toward the doorway.
“What did you say?”
The small voice came again.
“I want Grace.”
My heart shattered.
Daniel stepped into view.
“Lily, go downstairs.”
“No.”
My daughter sounded frightened, but determined.
“She’s crying.”
Nathan moved toward the door.
Then Daniel blocked him.
“Leave her alone.”
The recording crackled.
Margaret said something about calling security.
Then Nathan shouted:
“If that child tells Emily, the entire arrangement collapses!”
The video ended.
I sat motionless.
My husband knew.
He had known Lily was frightened.
He had known she had seen Grace.
He had known Nathan was dangerous.
And still he’d brought our daughter home and pretended everything was normal.
Sarah quietly closed the laptop.
“Emily?”
I couldn’t speak.
Because suddenly I remembered Lily asking me something the following morning.
“Mommy, if somebody is locked in a room, does that mean they were bad?”
I’d answered without looking up from the breakfast dishes.
“No, sweetheart. Sometimes grown-ups lock rooms to keep things safe.”
She’d gone silent.
Then whispered:
“What if the person inside isn’t safe?”
I had turned around.
But Daniel walked into the kitchen before I could answer.
He placed his hand on Lily’s shoulder.
And she stopped talking.
I began sobbing.
“She tried to tell me.”
Sarah sat beside me.
“You responded when you realized she needed help. What matters now is that she has support and that the investigation is moving forward.”
I wiped my eyes.
Then asked the question I had been avoiding.
“Why did Lily have pain when she went to the bathroom?”
Sarah’s expression grew serious.
“Dr. Lawson has updated us that the specialists are evaluating several possible causes. They have not established a single explanation, and they won’t assume the incident report proves one.”
I nodded.
My daughter’s symptoms were real.
Her fear was real.
Whatever caused either one deserved careful medical attention.
And if someone had harmed her, I wanted accountability based on evidence, not guesses.
But one thing was already certain.
Daniel had concealed circumstances that put Lily in danger.
And I would never excuse that.
At six forty-five that evening, Detective Collins received a call.
She listened silently.
Then looked at me.
“Emily, we have located Dr. Samuel Whitmore.”
My heart stopped.
“Alive?”
She nodded.
“He contacted authorities and is currently being interviewed with his attorney present.”
I grabbed the chair.
“What did he say?”
“He claims the medical program involved improper documentation and that some procedures lacked appropriate consent.”
My stomach tightened.
“And my daughters?”
Sarah paused.
“He has offered to identify which records were altered.”
I stared.
“Does that mean he can tell us what happened?”
“It may help us understand the medical history. The specialists will still need to evaluate the information independently.”
I nodded.
Then Harris entered.
His expression was unlike anything I’d seen before.
“Sarah, we have another problem.”
She turned.
“What?”
“Daniel has made contact.”
My heart hammered.
“Where?”
“He went to his attorney’s office.”
I stared.
“He’s turning himself in?”
“He’s reportedly discussing a voluntary interview with investigators.”
I almost laughed.
Now?
After everything?
After hiding my daughter?
After threatening me?
After disappearing from the cabin?
He was ready to talk?
Harris continued.
“He wants one condition.”
I felt cold.
“What condition?”
“He wants to speak to Emily.”
Sarah shook her head.
“That isn’t necessary.”
But I stood.
“What does he want to say?”
Harris hesitated.
“He claims he knows where the remaining original Evergreen records are hidden.”
My pulse quickened.
“Then give the location to the police.”
“His attorney says he’s refusing to disclose it until he speaks with you.”
I stared at them.
For years, Daniel had controlled every conversation.
Every decision.
Every secret.
Even now, he was trying to make me come to him for answers.
I took a breath.
“No.”
Sarah looked at me.
“Emily?”
“Tell him he can give the evidence to the police. He doesn’t get to use my daughters to bargain for access to me.”
Sarah nodded approvingly.
And for the first time, I felt something inside me change.
I was no longer waiting for Daniel to explain my life.
I was taking it back.
Then Harris’s phone rang again.
He listened.
His expression slowly changed.
“What?”
A pause.
“Are you certain?”
He looked toward us.
“Sarah, the medical team has confirmed something about Grace.”
My heart pounded.
“What?”
Harris swallowed.
“The approved identification testing is complete.”
I stood.
“Please.”
He looked directly at me.
“Grace is your biological daughter. The results are consistent with her being Lily’s identical twin.”
My legs nearly gave way.
Six years.
Six years of lies.
Six years of wondering.
And now science had confirmed what my heart had already begun to believe.
Grace was mine.
My little girl.
My missing daughter.
I covered my face and cried.
Then Sarah smiled gently.
“Emily, the child-protection team has finished planning the initial meeting.”
I looked up through tears.
“What meeting?”
She took my hand.
“Grace says she’s ready to meet you.”
For a moment, the world stood still.
Then I whispered:
“Take me to my daughter.”
