PART 5
Arthur looked at the detective as if he had aged twenty years in a single minute.
Ryan’s hand rested on the handcuffs at his belt.
“Mr. Carter,” he said quietly, “tell us exactly what happened to the other baby.”
Arthur closed his eyes.
For a long moment, the only sound in the apartment was Daniel’s uneven breathing as he knelt beside me.
Finally, Arthur spoke.
“The other baby… lived.”
No one interrupted.
“He belonged to Olivia Bennett.”
He swallowed hard.
“Our son died during delivery. The doctor told me there was nothing they could do.”
I felt Maya’s hand tighten around my shoulder.
Arthur continued, his voice breaking for the first time.
“I walked past the nursery while they were trying to restore power. Babies were being moved. Bracelets had been removed so they could be replaced after the outage. There was confusion everywhere.”
Elena began crying.
“I told him no,” she whispered. “I told him it was impossible.”
Arthur nodded.
“I begged her.”
He looked directly at me.
“I had just watched you almost die. I couldn’t bear walking into your room and telling you your child was gone.”
“You stole someone else’s baby,” I said.
He didn’t argue.
“Yes.”
The truth hung between us like smoke.
The Mother Who Never Stopped Searching
Detective Ryan opened Maya’s tablet.
“Mrs. Carter,” he asked, “how did you find Olivia Bennett?”
Maya wiped away her tears.
“It started with an insurance policy.”
She explained that months earlier, while organizing old family documents in Daniel’s storage unit, she had discovered hospital invoices addressed to two different mothers.
At first she thought it was a filing mistake.
Then she found something stranger.
A newspaper clipping dated October 1996.
The headline read:
Young Mother Claims Hospital Switched Her Baby.
Olivia Bennett had spent years insisting her healthy newborn had been replaced with a stillborn infant.
Everyone had dismissed her.
The hospital blamed trauma.
Doctors called her grief delusional.
Eventually the case disappeared.
“She never stopped looking,” Maya whispered.
Ryan nodded slowly.
“We know who Olivia is.”
My heart stopped.
“You found her?”
“Yes.”
“She’s alive?”
“She lives in North Carolina.”
Daniel looked up.
“And… my brother?”
Ryan hesitated.
“We believe he’s alive too.”
No one moved.
For thirty years, another man had been living an ordinary life without knowing the truth.
And somewhere, another mother had gone to sleep every night believing the hospital stole her child.
She had been right all along.
The Arrest
Ryan stepped toward Arthur.
“Arthur Carter, you are under arrest for fraud, identity manipulation, forgery, conspiracy, and obstruction of justice. Additional charges related to the infant identity investigation will depend on the court’s findings.”
One officer gently took the green property folder from Arthur’s hands.
The other placed handcuffs around his wrists.
The metallic click echoed through the apartment.
Arthur didn’t resist.
Before leaving, he turned to me.
“Tess…”
I looked at the man I had loved since I was twenty-two.
The man whose children I dreamed of having.
The man whose coffee I had made that very morning.
“I did love you,” he whispered.
I nodded.
“I know.”
He looked relieved.
Then I finished my sentence.
“But love without truth becomes another kind of prison.”
The officers led him away.
The apartment door closed.
And just like that, thirty-two years of lies walked out with him.
