CHAPTER 4 THE WOMAN WHO STOLE TWO CHILDREN.

For thirty years…

Victoria Moretti had lived with one question.

What happened to my daughter?

Every birthday.

Every Christmas.

Every night when the mansion became silent.

She asked herself the same thing.

Was Isabella scared?

Was she hungry?

Did someone hold her when she cried?

Did she call for her mother?

Or did she eventually forget her?

Victoria had built an empire.

She had defeated competitors.

She had survived betrayals.

She had become a woman the world respected.

But she had never defeated the pain of losing her child.

And now…

After thirty years…

Her daughter was standing in front of her.

Alive.

Beautiful.

Confused.

But alive.

Yet the person responsible for destroying her family…

Was also alive.

Evelyn Moretti.

Her own sister.

The Moretti mansion had never felt so cold.

Olivia sat across from Victoria in the library.

The same room where secrets had been hidden for decades.

The photograph of two children remained on the table.

Olivia.

And Ethan.

Together.

On the same night they disappeared.

“Tell me everything.”

Olivia’s voice was calm.

But Victoria could hear the pain underneath.

“No more lies.”

Victoria closed her eyes.

Because she knew Olivia was right.

She had spent years protecting the Moretti name.

Protecting the family’s reputation.

Protecting the people she loved.

But all those secrets had created the disaster sitting in front of her.

“You deserve the truth.”

Victoria looked at the old photograph.

“Evelyn was my younger sister.”

Olivia listened carefully.

“She was always brilliant.”

Victoria smiled sadly.

“Too brilliant.”

“She could read people.”

“She knew their weaknesses.”

“She knew their desires.”

“But she always believed the world owed her something.”

Victoria touched the photograph.

“When our parents died, they left the family company to me.”

Olivia looked surprised.

“Why?”

“Because they trusted me.”

Victoria paused.

“But Evelyn never forgave me.”

Thirty years earlier.

Before the empire.

Before the betrayal.

Before the missing children.

Victoria and Evelyn were sisters who shared everything.

At least…

That was what Victoria believed.

They grew up in a wealthy family.

They attended the same schools.

They had the same opportunities.

But there was always one difference.

Victoria was loved.

Evelyn was admired.

And Evelyn hated the difference.

Because admiration was not enough.

She wanted control.

When Victoria married Richard Moretti, her life became even more successful.

The Moretti family grew stronger.

Their businesses expanded.

Their influence increased.

Then Isabella was born.

And something inside Evelyn changed.

Everyone loved the baby.

The entire family celebrated.

Richard carried the child proudly.

Victoria spent every moment with her daughter.

For the first time…

Evelyn felt invisible.

“She thought Isabella was the reason she had lost everything.”

Victoria whispered.

Olivia looked confused.

“She blamed a child?”

Victoria nodded.

“Yes.”

“And that was only the beginning.”

Meanwhile…

Ethan sat in the old family archives.

He had spent hours searching through documents.

Trying to find anything.

A birth certificate.

A record.

A clue.

Something that could explain who he really was.

Then he found it.

A newspaper article from thirty years ago.

The headline read:

UNKNOWN BOY FOUND AFTER MORETTI CHILD DISAPPEARANCE.

Ethan stared.

The article showed a picture of a small child.

Him.

Below it was a sentence:

The boy was found approximately six miles from the Moretti estate on the same night Isabella Moretti vanished.

His heart stopped.

Same night.

Same area.

Same mystery.

Then he noticed something else.

A witness statement.

A name.

Evelyn Moretti.

Ethan’s hands froze.

“No…”

He kept reading.

The witness claimed:

“A woman matching Evelyn Moretti’s description was seen near the abandoned train station carrying a child.”

Ethan stood quickly.

Impossible.

His entire body felt numb.

The woman who destroyed his family…

Had been the woman who found him.

Back in the library…

Olivia asked the question Victoria feared.

“What happened that night?”

Victoria looked away.

“It was a charity event.”

“The entire family was at the estate.”

“Isabella was playing in the garden.”

“Evelyn was there too.”

Olivia’s eyes narrowed.

“And then?”

Victoria’s voice became softer.

“Then my daughter disappeared.”

A painful silence.

“The police searched for days.”

“They found nothing.”

“Until Richard received a call.”

Olivia already knew.

“The boy.”

Victoria nodded.

“Yes.”

“Ethan.”

Victoria looked toward the hallway.

“The little boy they found became the son we raised.”

Olivia whispered:

“But why?”

Victoria looked at her.

“That is the question I never answered.”

Suddenly…

The library door opened.

Ethan walked in.

His face was pale.

“I know why.”

Both women turned.

Victoria stood.

“Ethan.”

He placed the newspaper article on the table.

“I found this.”

Victoria read it.

Her expression changed.

Olivia looked between them.

“You knew?”

Victoria looked devastated.

“No.”

But Ethan interrupted.

“She knew enough.”

The accusation hurt.

Victoria stepped back.

“Ethan, listen to me.”

“No.”

His voice cracked.

“You lost your daughter.”

He pointed at himself.

“Then a few days later, you found me.”

A pause.

“And nobody questioned that?”

Victoria looked down.

Because she had.

She had questioned everything.

But grief had made her desperate.

“When I saw you…”

Her voice broke.

“You were the same age Isabella was.”

Ethan stared.

“And you thought I could replace her.”

Victoria’s eyes filled with tears.

“No.”

She shook her head.

“You were never a replacement.”

She stepped closer.

“You were a child who needed a family.”

Ethan looked away.

But before he could respond…

A phone rang.

Everyone froze.

It was Victoria’s private phone.

The number was unknown.

She answered.

“Hello?”

No one spoke.

Then…

A woman’s voice came through.

A voice Victoria recognized instantly.

“Hello, sister.”

Victoria’s blood turned cold.

Evelyn.

“You finally found Isabella.”

Victoria gripped the phone.

“Where are you?”

Evelyn laughed.

“You still think you can command me?”

“You stole my daughter.”

Silence.

Then Evelyn replied:

“No.”

Her voice became darker.

“I saved her.”

Everyone froze.

“What?”

Evelyn continued.

“You don’t know what happened that night.”

Victoria’s expression changed.

“What did you do?”

“I protected Isabella from you.”

Olivia stepped closer.

“Who is this?”

Evelyn heard her.

And smiled.

“So that’s my niece.”

Olivia’s face changed.

Evelyn continued:

“Poor little girl.”

“You spent thirty years believing you were abandoned.”

“But the truth is…”

A pause.

“I was the only person who actually wanted you.”

Victoria shouted:

“Where are you?”

Evelyn ignored her.

Instead, she said something that destroyed everything.

“Ask Richard why Isabella was never reported missing properly.”

Victoria froze.

“What?”

“Ask him why the police file was changed.”

Silence.

Then Evelyn whispered:

“Because Richard knew exactly where your daughter was.”

The call ended.

Nobody spoke.

The accusation was impossible.

Richard?

Victoria’s husband?

The father of her children?

The man who had searched beside her?

Could he have known?

Ethan looked at Victoria.

“Did Dad know?”

Victoria couldn’t answer.

Because deep inside…

A memory returned.

A memory she had buried.

The night Isabella disappeared…

Richard had received a phone call.

A phone call he refused to explain.

For thirty years, she thought it was about the search.

Now…

She wasn’t sure.

That evening…

Richard entered his private office.

He found something waiting on his desk.

An envelope.

Inside was a letter.

Only one sentence was written:

“You promised me you would never tell the truth.”

Richard’s face turned white.

Because he knew exactly who sent it.

Evelyn.

And underneath the message…

Was a second line.

A line that made him collapse into his chair.

“If you don’t confess, I will tell Ethan who his real parents are.”

At the same time…

Ethan received another message.

From an unknown number.

Attached was an old photograph.

A photograph of a young couple holding a baby boy.

The baby was Ethan.

The message underneath said:

“Your parents didn’t abandon you.”

“They were murdered.”

Ethan stared at the screen.

His hands began shaking.

Because suddenly…

The mystery was no longer about a missing daughter.

It was about a stolen family.

Two children.

Two lies.
