CHAPTER 5 THE SECRET PARENTS OF ETHAN MORETTI.

The message remained on Ethan’s phone.

He stared at the photograph again and again.

A young couple.

A baby.

And underneath it…

A sentence that destroyed everything he believed.

“Your parents didn’t abandon you.”

“They were murdered.”

For thirty years, Ethan Moretti had lived with a simple truth.

He was the adopted son of Richard and Victoria Moretti.

A child with no past.

No history.

No family.

A boy who had been given a second chance.

That was the story everyone told him.

But now…

Every piece of that story was falling apart.

Because someone was telling him something completely different.

Someone was saying he was not a lost child.

He was a stolen child.

The next morning, Ethan drove alone to the old Moretti archives.

He needed answers.

Not from his parents.

Not from Victoria.

Not from Richard.

Because every person he trusted had hidden something from him.

He needed proof.

The archive building was located beneath the oldest part of the Moretti estate.

A place few people knew existed.

For decades, the family had stored everything there.

Business records.

Legal documents.

Personal files.

Secrets.

Especially secrets.

Ethan unlocked the door using his family access code.

A code that suddenly felt meaningless.

Was it even his family?

Or was it just another thing borrowed from someone else?

He turned on the lights.

Rows of shelves appeared.

Thousands of documents.

Thousands of memories.

He searched for one thing.

His name.

Not Ethan Moretti.

His real name.

After hours of searching…

He found an old box.

No label.

No date.

Only one symbol.

A small carved lotus.

The same symbol as Olivia’s jade pendant.

His heart started beating faster.

He opened the box.

Inside were several documents.

The first was a photograph.

The same photograph he had received.

But this one was older.

On the back were names.

Alexander and Sophia Vale.

Ethan froze.

Vale.

That name meant something.

He searched his memories.

Then he remembered.

A business article from twenty-five years ago.

The Vale family.

A wealthy but quiet family known for technology investments.

They disappeared from public life after a mysterious accident.

Everyone assumed they had lost everything.

But Ethan had never heard about a child.

His child.

Then he found another document.

A birth certificate.

His hands trembled.

Name: Nathaniel Alexander Vale.

Not Ethan Moretti.

Nathaniel.

He read the date.

The location.

Everything matched.

He wasn’t just adopted.

He had been renamed.

His entire identity had been erased.

A sound behind him made him turn.

The archive door opened.

Ethan immediately closed the folder.

But it was too late.

The person standing there had already seen everything.

Richard Moretti.

His father.

Or at least…

The man who raised him.

For several seconds, neither spoke.

Then Richard sighed.

“I knew this day would come.”

Ethan looked at him.

“You knew?”

Richard lowered his eyes.

“Yes.”

The answer hurt more than a lie.

“You knew who I was?”

Richard nodded slowly.

“Yes.”

Ethan laughed quietly.

A painful laugh.

“For thirty years?”

Richard remained silent.

“Thirty years you watched me call you Dad.”

Richard’s eyes filled with regret.

“I loved you.”

Ethan looked away.

“That doesn’t answer the question.”

Richard stepped closer.

“I saved your life.”

Ethan’s expression hardened.

“Did you?”

A pause.

“Or did you steal it?”

The words hit Richard.

Because somewhere inside…

He knew Ethan had the right to ask.

Richard sat down.

For the first time, Ethan saw him look old.

Not powerful.

Not untouchable.

Just tired.

“The night you were found…”

Richard began.

“I wasn’t looking for another child.”

Ethan listened.

“I was looking for Isabella.”

A silence.

“The police had no leads.”

“Victoria was falling apart.”

“She stopped eating.”

“She stopped sleeping.”

Richard looked at the floor.

“She blamed herself.”

“So I searched everywhere.”

“Every street.”

“Every hospital.”

“Every abandoned building.”

“Every place someone could hide a child.”

Then his voice changed.

“And that’s when I found you.”

Ethan stared.

“Where?”

“Near the train station.”

“The same place where Isabella disappeared.”

Ethan felt cold.

“Why were we there?”

Richard shook his head.

“I don’t know.”

“That’s the truth.”

Ethan looked angry.

“You expect me to believe that?”

Richard looked at him.

“I found you unconscious.”

“You had a small injury on your head.”

“You were holding a piece of paper.”

Ethan froze.

“What paper?”

Richard hesitated.

Then said:

“A note.”

“What did it say?”

Richard looked away.

“I destroyed it.”

Ethan stood.

“You destroyed evidence?”

Richard closed his eyes.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because the note said something I couldn’t accept.”

Ethan stepped closer.

“What?”

Richard’s voice became a whisper.

“It said…”

He swallowed.

“‘They will come back for him.’”

Meanwhile…

Olivia sat with Victoria in the garden.

Neither woman had slept.

Their lives had changed overnight.

Two strangers connected by blood.

Two families connected by tragedy.

Victoria looked at Olivia.

“I need to tell you something.”

Olivia looked up.

“What?”

“When Isabella disappeared…”

She hesitated.

“I received a letter.”

Olivia frowned.

“A letter?”

Victoria nodded.

“It arrived three days after she vanished.”

“What did it say?”

Victoria looked away.

“It said Isabella was alive.”

Olivia became still.

“Then why didn’t you tell anyone?”

Victoria’s eyes filled with tears.

“Because Richard told me it was a trap.”

“And I believed him.”

A long silence.

Olivia whispered:

“You never stopped looking.”

Victoria shook her head.

“Never.”

She touched Olivia’s hand.

“Every year on your birthday, I bought a gift.”

Olivia looked surprised.

“Why?”

“Because a mother knows.”

Victoria’s voice broke.

“She knows when her child is still somewhere in this world.”

That afternoon…

A private investigator arrived at the mansion.

The man introduced himself as Daniel Cross.

He carried a folder.

“I found something.”

Everyone gathered in the library.

Victoria.

Olivia.

Ethan.

Richard.

Daniel placed several documents on the table.

“Thirty years ago, there was an investigation into Isabella’s disappearance.”

Victoria nodded.

“Yes.”

“But the official report was changed.”

Everyone looked at Richard.

He became silent.

Daniel continued.

“The original report mentioned two children.”

Ethan looked up.

“Two?”

Daniel nodded.

“Isabella Moretti.”

“And Nathaniel Vale.”

Ethan’s breathing stopped.

“The same night?”

“Yes.”

Olivia looked at Victoria.

“How is that possible?”

Daniel opened another file.

“Because according to the original evidence…”

He placed a photograph on the table.

A photograph showing two children.

The same two children from before.

“They were together before they disappeared.”

Nobody spoke.

Then Daniel revealed the final piece.

“The person who last saw them alive…”

Everyone leaned closer.

Daniel looked directly at Victoria.

“It was not Evelyn.”

A pause.

“It was someone inside this house.”

The room went silent.

Richard’s face changed.

Because he already knew the name.

Victoria noticed.

“You know.”

Richard didn’t answer.

“Who?”

Richard closed his eyes.

Then whispered:

“The person who took your daughter…”

“And changed Ethan’s identity…”

Was someone they had trusted for decades.

The door suddenly opened.

A woman stood there.

Everyone froze.

Because nobody expected her to return.

Especially not now.

Especially not after thirty years.

It was Evelyn Moretti.

She smiled.

“You finally found the truth.”

Victoria stood.

“You.”

Evelyn looked at Ethan.

Then Olivia.

Then Richard.

“I didn’t steal two children.”

Her smile disappeared.

“I protected them.”

Ethan stepped forward.

“Protected us from what?”

Evelyn looked at Richard.

And said the words that changed everything:

“From the man who was supposed to be your father.”

Everyone turned toward Richard.

Richard’s face went pale.
